To boldly go - Lindsay learns a lunar lesson

A MAIDSTONE teacher has boldly gone where few science professionals tread – to the Amer- ican space centre and beyond. Lindsay Hobbs donned her as- tronaut suit to undergoing simu- lated space missions, land and water survival tests, coding chal- lenges and jet simulation training at the US Space and Rocket Centre (USSRC), in Huntsville, Alabama. As one of 200 teachers, from 33 countries, selected to join the Hon- eywell Educators at Space Acad- emy Programme, the teacher at St Simon Stock Catholic School, in Maidstone, described the mission as a once-in-a-lifetime trip. She said: “This was the most in- credible, exhilarating and interest- ing professional development program I have ever attended. I was buzzing with excitement the whole time, and I cannotwait to try out some of the activities that we completed at SpaceAcademy inmy classroom.” The programme has been de-

vised to inspire teachers to find new, creative ways of bringing sci-

ence, technology, engineering and maths to life in the classroom. Dr Deborah Barnhart, CEOof the

US Space & Rocket Center, said: “Technology is changing exponen- tially. Things we once held as im- possibilities are reality – we are on our journey to Mars. “Educating the next generation

of leaders and learners is key to global success. “The Honeywell Educators at

Space Academy program unites teachers with exciting tools and methods to change the lives of stu-

dents around the globe.” The USSRC is a world-famous museum operated by the govern- ment of Alabama, showcasing rockets, achievements, and artifacts of the U.S. space programme. Sometimes billed as "Earth's largest space museum", astronaut Owen Garriott described the place as, "a great way to learn about space in a town that has embraced the space program from the very beginning." Opened in 1970, just after the sec-

ond manned mission to the lunar surface.
