Library site is set to be apartments

VIEWS are being sought on a sec- ond high storey housing develop- ment in Maidstone. The proposed 162-unit apartment

block would see the demolition of the old “book tower” at the former Springfield library, which has stood empty since the county council moved out 16 years ago.

The brownfield

sitewas bought in July last year by Peker Holding, with permission for 100 apartments, 14 houses and 47 parking spaces. Peker says it is looking to build

162 apartments, with 65 parking spaces and more green space on the site, of little more than an acre. The apartment block would rise to a height “not significantly shorter” than the existing 13 storey tower block, which sits at the northern gateway to the town. Borough

councillor for the area Tony Har- wood says the high rise plan would help cover the high cost of demol- ishing the tower block, which has been found to contain asbestos. Cllr Harwood said: “I am under

no illusion about the cost of tidying up this site, but with section 106 money from other developments already in the coffers, the issue is not so much funding much-needed community facilities for the area but finding the room to do it, par- ticularly whenwe are seeing piece- meal development of small sites such as these.” Niyazi Albay, CEO of Peker Holding, said: “We believe these proposals are an improvement on the previous scheme, which would have provided no affordable hous- ing. Our proposal would create much-needed new accommodation in the area aswell as space for new community facilities. Residents have expressed the need for a doc- tors’ surgery and child care facili- ties in the area and while the council would ultimately decide how this space is used, we would work closely with them.”
