My favourite things

Bianca Wu moved to London in January from Hong Kong and has lived in Las Vegas (US) and Canada. Her husband relocated with his company and they are starting a European chapter in their life together. She is currently unemployed and looking forward to volunteering opportunities and graduate school.

Your best advice to someone just arriving

in the UK? Get a permanent address as soon as you can. Address proof is key to setting up most of your important items: bank account, mobile phone etc. Be patient and expect that everything will take longer than you think.

Your preferred pub, bar and/or

restaurant? Sushi Show in Angel. An inexpensive option to get quality fish and sushi, authentically made by a talented Japanese chef!

The highlight of your UK

adventure so far? Exploring different markets and neighbourhoods. Each borough has so much to offer and there is always something to see.

Your preferred

West End show? Book of Mormon for its wittiness and great laugh. Wicked for everything else!

Your favourite flower shop? The Columbia Road Flower Market on Sundays is perfect for brunch and flower shopping.

Your favourite expression you have adopted

since being here? “Cheers” instead of saying “thanks”. It is just more fun to say “cheers”!

Your preferred mode of transport?

The bus on a nice day (and if you aren’t in a rush). Fun tip: sit at the front of the second level and really take in the architecture and

neighbourhoods. 32 FOCUS The Magazine July/August 2017 www.focus-info.org Your favourite food to eat in

the UK? Scones and high tea! It’s hard to resist all the beautiful baked goods with the homemade jams.

The ultimate gourmet

food or wine shop? Try Gordon’s Wine Bar, the oldest wine bar in London. Its quaint

Dickensian-style décor and vaults makes for a great start to a night out.

The best spot to

people watch? Somerset House has a beautiful courtyard where you can enjoy the neoclassical palace exterior while people watching. This museum shares the building with many other organisations, including King’s College, so the mix of people is always fun to watch.

Your favourite museum

or gallery? The Natural History Museum is such a classic. Get a membership to skip the perpetual line and have your coat checked.

Your favourite park? Greenwich Park is so worth the visit. Apart from the fun people watching and vast green spaces, there are also activities; the National Maritime museum is fun for kids, and the Royal Observatory in the park is London’s only planetarium.

Your favourite place to have a fun,

cultural night out? Museum late nights are one of my favourite things to do. Learn something new and check out exhibits, and then grab a drink with friends nearby!

Best thing about London in the

spring and summer in the UK? Finally feeling the sun come out!
