Destination: Art Tasteful trips for cultural connoisseurs

As we hit the peak days of summer, London is buzzing with outdoor cinemas, garden barbecues, and long walks along the river Thames. The striped sunchairs in Hyde Park almost feel like a mini trip to Saint-Tropez. Many of us are dreaming of jetting off to sandy beaches and turquoise seas for some much-needed R&R. For the art-minded set, the perfect getaway includes a bit more than a charming tiki hut and a rum punch. Scattered across Europe are art fairs and events in cities beautiful enough to hold their own even without the temporary influx of contemporary art. London itself is not exactly dry for culture (Frieze Art Fair is just around the corner in October), but the promise of exploring a new city while also achieving your aesthetic aspirations is as good a reason as any to book a trip. Here, we have rounded up a few of the best fairs to fill up your agendas in the most creative way.

Documenta Athens, Greece: Until 16 July 2017

Kassel, Germany: Until 17 September 2017 This dual-city art fair is not only unique because of its split location, but it is also special because it only happens once every five years. Its base is the stunning town of Kassel, a sort of Mecca for contemporary art lovers, and with each iteration the fair sparks a cross-country collaboration by partnering with a different international city. This year, the chosen city is Athens, a locale with a long history of fine art and creativity, so the ancient site will surely create a cool backdrop to the presentation of new work..

Venice Biennial of Art

Venice, Italy: Until 26 November 2017 The Biennale d’Arte in Venice is the most prestigious in terms of art fairs. More than 120 years old and modelled after the 19th century form of World’s Fair Expositions, the biannual festival is widely known for setting the tone in the current climate of contemporary art. The main exhibition takes place in the Arsenale, a former shipyard armoury, and also in the Giardini, a garden to the easterly side of the city, which is permanently dedicated to the event. Each participating country has its own pavilion to feature chosen domestic artists, and even the architectural styles of the buildings are a sight to behold. Beyond the Giardini, the city of Venice comes alive with art around every corner, from shows in local galleries to project spaces in old palazzos. The quality of the parallel exhibitions is nearly always exceptional. The Fondazione Prada and The Pinault Collection are two not to miss!
