TECH SPOTLIGHT

NATIONAL OCEANOGRAPHY CENTRE A recent project saw Romica delivering a containerised deep-ocean mooring winch system for the uk’s National Oceanography Centre (NOC). The 4,000-metre capacity winch system was designed for various large mooring operations at sea. It will be freighted worldwide in an ISO 20’open-topped container with an electrically driven hydraulic power unit, also in a 10’ ISO certified container. With the winch unit and power pack being self-contained they can be easily ‘cross decked’ between NOC vessels. The units include all peripherals for the winch system such as spares, remotes, cables and hoses. A key element to the containerised winch solution is it allows NOC to utilise the system on international partnership vessels as well as those of other NERC (Natural Environment Research Council)organisations - such as British Antarctic Survey, which recently announced the purchase of a new research ship.

or are prepared to work as closely as they do developing the bespoke solutions the customer wants. This approach is proven to deliver the best engineering solutions. Romica has supplied equipment to more than eight Fugro built geotechnical survey vessels in the last 10 years and their team brings collectively more than 50 years experience to the sector. Due to its ongoing successes Romica is now actively searching to win more work in the geotechnical ship building sector. Romica’s Romanian manufacturing plant recently acquired accreditation with DNV GL, the world’s leading classification society for its repair and manufacturing operations which it operates from its 7000m2 fabrication facility.

FUGRO VENTURER Romica has completed a major deal to supply deck equipment for the new state-of-the-art geophysical and geotechnical survey vessel operated by global offshore survey specialist Fugro. Romica provided equipment for the 2455 gross tonne Fugro Venturer. The 71.5 metre vessel is built to undertake a range of geophysical survey work for sectors like oil and gas and renewables. The Romica team worked closely with Fugro on the project for more than three years designing equipment then manufacturing it at its plant in Romania. Romica used its years of expertise to provide a range of A frame and launch systems to suit a variety of seabed sampling and sensitive measurement devices. These included coring handling systems, side scan winches, sub bottom profiler winch systems and gun array handling systems.

The equipment was then transported overland by truck to the shipyard and subsequently Romica engineers helped to install it.

This approach of working as part of their team and not just being remote and handing over an off the shelf product makes Romica different and gives them a competitive edge. Very few companies have the tried and tested experience of Romica

JAMES FISHER OFFSHORE In the commercial field Romica recently signed an agreement with James Fisher Offshore to provide a total of 14 winches of various sizes (50Te, 30Te and 15Te line pull). The systems were delivered to support Fisher Offshore’s expansion of rental operations within the Asia Pacific region from its base in Labuan Malaysia. James Fisher Offshore, a specialist in lifting, deck machinery, subsea tooling and excavation is targeting growth in new markets with a prime emphasis on providing fully engineered solutions to respond to evolving industry requirements. It is working closely with Romica as it has recognized

the increasing global demand for providing an integrated offering of winching and hoisting within the subsea support sector. This project demonstrates Romica’s desire to work as part of our clients’ teams, and instead of providing an off the shelf product we delivered a bespoke solution.

Team expansion Romica’s uk team has recently been strengthened by the arrival of my daughter and Technical Director, Sarah Turner, North East and Scotland Business Development Manager Iain Fullerton and UK Project Manager Adam Springall. Sarah is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and Armstrong Prize Winner at Newcastle University. Sarah has spent the last seven years with Deep Ocean and before that worked for DUCO. Sarah has been tasked with driving the company’s technical impetus. Meanwhile, Iain joins Romica having worked in Aberdeen’s oil and gas sector for more than 30 years for major companies like Kongsberg Maritime. He is charged with raising brand awareness in Scotland and the North East. Adam Spingall joins from Fugro to head up Romica’s Project Management delivery.
