MARINE LIFT EQUIPMENT & WINCHES Marine lift equipment and winches play a crucial and varied role at sea. Managing director of Beverley, UK, based Romica Engineering Limited Bob Turner explains how his firm has recently designed and manufactured winch solutions to support a multitude of maritime activities. This includes sonar scanning the sea bed in international efforts to hunt for missing airplanes, to deep-ocean mooring operations, as well as vessel inspection and maintenance, and lifting of heavy deck machinery.

Romica was founded in 2003 and we have grown the company into one of the world’s leading designers, and manufacturers of lift equipment and winches. Today 80pc of our sales come from exports and we have agents in South Korea, Taiwan, India and Spain. Our products are used across the marine, renewables, ports and terminals, oil and gas and oceanographic sectors.

However, we believe it is Romica’s approach to work that is the key to our success. We work as a trusted partner designing and manufacturing custom made winch solutions. We work with our clients like an in-house member of their team. We do not just palm them off with easy off the shelf solutions. This dedication to customer service, this passion for solving our customers problems has created many long term clients and given us a competitive edge. Moreover our collaborative approach has opened up new markets for our products used for mixed and varied applications.

HIGH QUALITY AT A COMPETITIVE PRICE Romica works in partnership with TIE Services International SRL, based in Satu Mare, Romania. TIE is a British-owned, Romanian-registered company run by my son Michael Turner. TIE has just secured accreditation with DNV GL for its repair and manufacturing operations which it operates from its 7000m2 fabrication facility.

TIE provides Romica with its fabrication services and has been the backbone of Romica ‘s activity for the last 13 years. Gaining the prestigious DNV GL accreditation sends a strong message to the marine and offshore industry about the calibre of Romica’s winches, being manufactured by TIE, which already has certification for welding and fabrication including TUV ISO 9001, ISO 14001-2009, and TUV DIN EN ISO 3834-2.

Our Romanian factory gives us another unique selling point – high quality at a competitive price. Production costs are lower but the standard of engineering skills drawn from Romania’s manufacturing skill base is exceptionally high. The factory is split into three

distinct areas small component machine shop, fabrication, large component machining and assembly area, each equipped with two, 12.5Te cranes, along with shot blasting and paint facilities. Recent investment supported by EU funding, has seen TIE extend the factory to accommodate a larger machine shop, with a new horizontal borer machining centre offering the capability to machine large components with minimal handling

As a partnership Romica and TIE especially want to market fabrication services across the oil and gas and ship yard industries which require a wide range of outsourced fabrications services from furniture manufacturing to watertight doors to hatch covers.

Handling equipment solutions Romica’s marine lift and winch equipment is typically used for marine site surveys and seismic surveys in the oil and gas, offshore and oceanographic markets. We are a specialist in the design of umbilical handling winches and we offer a comprehensive range of handling equipment solutions, for such as AUVs, ROVs, sound source arrays, seismic recordings and deep-towed survey systems. All designed in compliance with the latest specific marine-classification society and health and safety requirements.

Through innovation, experience and customer service Romica is able to offer combinations of winch, A-frame and launch systems, suitable for a number of seabed sampling and benthic measurement devices. Our range of products includes a proven deepwater traction winch design, which includes wire monitoring and measurement of the outboard and storage tensions, and a range of winches fitted with right-angle level wind, which offers the client better use of deck space.
