BOLTING SOLUTIONS
BOLT SECURITY DEFINED AT OFFSHORE EUROPE
Security of bolted joints is of critical importance in the subsea and offshore industry and HEICO Fasteners new additions to their successful range of bolt fastening systems will be proving their capabilities at this year’s Offshore Europe Show.
There are a wide variety of bolt locking devices available on the market but not all of them meet the basic requirement of reliably preventing bolted joints from self-loosening. The HEICO-LOCK® range of wedge locking washers use preload force instead of friction to provide maximum bolt security even under extremes of vibration or dynamic loads.
The system uses wedge shaped cams on the inside of the washers and radial teeth on the outside that work together to maintain the bolts preload. When a bolt is tightened the external radial teeth embed themselves in an interlocking fashion with the respective mating surface. The wedge angle of the internal cams is greater than the pitch of the bolt thread and with movement only possible across these internal cams any loosening causes an expansion in the thickness of the HEICO- LOCK® washers, leading to an increase in the clamping force.
HEICO’s innovative approach to product development has seen the introduction of further fastening systems incorporating the wedge locking technology,
including combining the washers with a flanged nut to create a one piece design that removes the need for separate fasteners.
This innovation drive has seen HEICO recently launch the HEICO-LOCK® Combi-Washers, for highly loaded bolted connections, and the HEICO-LOCK® HLK Washers for steel construction. The Combi- Washers incorporate an inner plastic locking ring which ensures the permanent securing and correct positioning of the washers on the bolt, enabling quick and easy assembly, especially in difficult situations, and also reduces the chances of dropped objects.
The HEICO-LOCK® HLK Washers deliver anti-vibration security for HV sets according to DIN EN 14399-4 and DIN EN 14399-8. Due to the increased head radius of HV bolts, the HLK washers are chamfered on the internal diameter to ensure optimal surface contact while tightening. The HLK washers can be used to replace washers according to DIN EN 14399-6 and are approved by the German Institute for Structural Engineering (DIBt).
The HEICO-LOCK® range of products are available in steel and stainless steel and can also be produced from other special materials such as 254 SMO® and INCONEL®/Alloy 718, both of which are resistant in highly corrosive environments including seawater and acids. Paul Windsor, National Sales Manager for HEICO Fasteners UK said “We are really looking forward to demonstrating the bolt security effectiveness of the entire HEICO-LOCK® range at Offshore Europe. Our products are ideally suited to the subsea and offshore industries and provide real world solutions to safety critical issues”.

GLOBAL OEM RELEASE NEW CALIBRATION INNOVATION
As process quality procedures and operator safety continue to be increasingly stringent in industry, tool testing is of paramount importance.
North East Headquartered HTL Group have designed a Tensioner Test Rig which allows customers to safely pressure test bolt tensioners to ensure their integrity using a unique innovation to save a vast amount of test time and money.
The new design allows the load cell only to be tested quickly and safely avoiding the necessity to fit the bridge and screw on the puller, dramatically reducing the test time.
Titled as the ‘Premier Plus Range’, and finished in a durable blue powder coating with lockable castors ensures the range further promotes operator safety by guaranteeing easy mobility. In addition to this the OEM has also designed each rig to come supplied with all the features necessary to ensure full control during in-house testing, as well as promoting operator safety.
Stephen Jones, HTL Group CEO comments: “Consistent innovation to ensure HTL continue to meet and exceed customer expectations is top priority for us.
The Premier Plus range of Tensioner Test Rigs is our latest step to fulfil this aim. Bringing new technology to achieve a quicker and more efficient method of testing tensioning equipment will save our customers valuable time and provide vast cost savings.
With further product innovations to be released throughout the year, the HTL Premier Plus Tensioner Test Rig range is one of many 100% customer focused solutions we have designed to solve the challenges our customers face every day.”
Full details including the technical specification and bespoke options are available to view on HTL’s website and a video demonstration is available on their YouTube channel.
