The Crack Of Dawn: Daybreak Disco
Rise and shine Norwich! Get up at goddamn o’clock on a Sunday morning, put on your gladrags and march yourself down to the Arts Centre this month for a breakfast dance like no other. Helen out of Bo Nananfana is organising The Crack Of Dawn for the morning of the Norwich Lanes Summer Fayre, and not only will you get class DJ’s, entertainment and great decorations but also The Egg Café will be cooking up some treats in the Café Bar for your delectation. There’s not much else I would rouse myself for at 6am on a Sunday. Probably. I spoke to Helen about her plans, what she’ll be wearing on the day and how she feels about Norwich.
You run Bo Nanafana, Helen. How long has it been going for, and what have been some of the best nights? Over 11 years! Caravan Palace, Te Selecter, the early Spiegel tent nights.. Vile Bodies was one of the most beautiful with everyone dressed in 20’s clothes. I think my personal favourite was Bo To Te Future. Tere hasn’t been a Bo for a little while – is there another one coming up? I have been concentrating on Bo Family Socials – I have a free one coming up at Chantry Car Park at Culture Works East Launchpad Area for the Lord Mayors on Sat 8 July at 6:30pm called Te Big Bang, and another at Latitude in the Enchanted Garden on the Sunday morning called Te Octopus’s Garden. It’s a great mix of comedy, cabaret, music and dance for the whole family. It went down a storm at Latitude last year. Te Crack of Dawn is happening this month – how did you come up with this cool idea? I’ve always thought we should party in the mornings – and
the Lanes Summer Fayre seemed like the perfect time to start! Tere are other people doing Morning Raves, but they are a bit more about Chai Latte and healthy smoothies as opposed to our egg butties and coffees with free Berocca. It’s a great place for the insomniacs, the parents, the partiers and those who just love to dance. Why should we get up at a horrific hour and come along to it?
6am is rather early (though I seem to be waking at 5am these days, and if I do it, I’d like to force others). We are teaming up with the Egg Cafe so there will be live entertainment and Disco Buttyland in the Cafe Bar, dancing in the hall and we’ll be adding some extras like the Donut Wall, Berocca Bandits (sequinned hot-panted men) and dancercisers to teach you some moves. What kind of music and entertainment can we expect? Disco and some guilty pleasures. Tere will be lots of feel good stuff with

the Dawn Chorus for you to join in with, plus people are singing and performing for their breakfast in the Egg Cafe. We’d like a mix of entertainments, so if anyone would like to come and perform please get in touch via the website or Facebook page. We really enjoyed the Egg Festival Café at NAC at last year’s NNF. How will they be involved in Te Crack Of Dawn? Tey will take over the Cafe Bar for Disco Buttyland – so you can dance and then give yourself indigestion with a bacon sandwich (veggie options available). Tere’s no booze this time but who knows …. next time some Bloody Marys and Tequila Sunrises would be great. Expect the same chaotic service and crocheted food items but with some added disco glitter. Will costumes be encouraged? What will you be wearing yourself? I’m going disco, but you can come in your pyjamas or a ball gown, or sequinned hotpants, or whatever you

fancy. I like the idea that I’ll be wearing it all day at the Lanes Fayre. You have a lot of contacts in Norwich, and run a lot of different events – what is it about Norwich and its people that you love? I’ve been here since the storms of 1987. I love the cosiness (Norwich, a Fine Settee), and people here love showing off, love music of all sorts and there’s some pretty sophisticated music tastes. Tere are myriad friendship groups that overlap and come together at Bo Nanafana and there’s a very specific irreverent sense of humour. And Norfolk and Suffolk are just beautiful.
