Temporary library ‘is under consideration’

TALKS are being held to open a temporary replacement commu- nity library in the centre of Bearsted. The Downs Mail has learned that, although the library at Madginford has been an effective stop-gap while Bearsted remains closed, a more central location is being investi- gated. The library in Ware Street has

been closed since April 15, as the county council compiles a list of re- pairs needed to the building, which was once the village school and has been the library since September 1975. The latest announcement by land-

lords Kent County Council is bound to fuel local fears the present premises is not going to reopen. A statement from Mike Hill,

KCC’s cabinet member for commu- nity services, hints a Bearsted li- brary may be located “elsewhere”. It said:“We are committed to pro-

viding the best library service we can across the county and, as far as Bearsted is concerned, this means doing all we can to ensure future

Bearsted library has been closed for a list of repairs to be compiled

provision in the village itself. Our temporary arrangements at Madg- inford have been workingwell, but we need to ensure that Bearsted has its own library, whether that be in the former premises or elsewhere.” A Kent County Council spokesman said: “Reopening the li- brary in its present location remains

our number one priority but I can- not say hand on heart at this stage thatwe can do that.” The spokesman said that a survey

of remedial work is taking longer than first thought and may prove to be prohibitively expensive, in which case, a permanent move to the temporary location is possible.
