RSVP / OUT & ABOUT 085 BEST-SELLING HISTORIAN LAUNCHES

LATEST BOOK AT HEVER Best-selling historian Alison Weir launched her latest book, Anne Boleyn: A King’s Obsession, at Hever Castle & Gardens on 18th May, the eve of the anniversary of the unfortunate Tudor queen’s execution in 1536.

The book is the second of a series of novels documenting the life of each of Henry VIII’s six wives. It comes hot on the heels of the best-selling Katherine of Aragon: The True Queen while Alison’s account of Jane Seymour, the short- lived mother of Henry’s son Edward VI, follows this autumn. Alison, who wrote a successful biography of the wives of Henry VIII in 1991, told 80 Tudor devotees that she had drawn on new research to write her book. It is difficult, she said, to understand Anne’s true feelings about Henry because so few of her letters survive. Historians have to rely on observations from people hostile to Anne, such as Eustache Chapuys, the Imperial ambassador, or Katherine of Aragon herself.

Hever was Anne’s childhood home. “I am thrilled to be speaking about Anne in her family seat, where memories of her are to be found at every corner,” said Alison. Local attendee Rachel Jepps credits Anne with changing history. “I love the Tudors for their passion, violence and religious upheaval,” she said.
