OBRA implements cell phone rule

Written by: Amelia Jaggard The Ontario Barrel Racing Asso-

ciation (OBRA) has implemented a rule prohibiting cell phone use in the holding pen, warm up area and arena. Following in suit with the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA), which implemented the same rule after experiencing problems involving cell phone use at their shows. In the OBRA rule book in the

general rules section, rule number 22 states: “In the interest of safety, cell phone use while in the holding pen, warm up area or arena is strictly for- bidden. First infraction will receive a warning and rider will be fined $25.00 for each subsequent infraction and

must be paid prior to being permitted back in the arena.” The decision to add this new rule

was made this spring at an OBRA Di- rector’s meeting. OBRA President Earl Chambers said ensuring the safety of riders and their horses is very important to the OBRA. Chambers said it just made sense for the OBRA to create this rule, adding, “My feeling is, there isn’t a text or phone call that can’t wait 10 to 15 minutes until your done riding.” OBRA Rule Director Wayne

Longfield, said the discussion about cell phone use was initiated by a mem- ber who had read the story on dis- tracted riding, published in the February issue of The Rider. If it was-

n’t for this story bringing the issue to member’s attention, Longfield said, “Like everything else, it would have taken an accident before it was put in.”

ORA and IPRA Amalgamate

Written by: Amelia Jaggard The Ontario Rodeo Association (ORA) has announced

its amalgamation with the International Professional Rodeo Association (IPRA). After 60 years of operation as a not-for- profit, the association’s board of directors made the decision to join the IPRA as the region of Ontario. The decision came as a result of rising cost of insurance

to protect show producers, competitors and volunteers. The board did not think it was financially feasible to raise the membership cost to the amount required to cover the expense of insurance. The ORA called this amalgamation an opportunity to

help rodeo grow in Ontario, writing on their website, “Every sport must evolve with the new age.”

The new partnership will allow competitors to

only have to purchase one membership card, either the IPRA Canada card or the IPRA World card. Competi- tors with either card will have insurance benefits to compete safely and are permitted to compete at IPRA sanctioned rodeos anywhere in Canada. IPRA Canada card holders will have the opportunity to qualify for the Canada finals. IPRA World card holders will have the opportunity to qualify for the International Finals Rodeo. The ORA will now become the region of Ontario

under the IPRA. Standing earnings will be accumu- lated for anyone with an Ontario residence holding the IPRA Canada or World card. ORA member Chelsie Clingen said she thinks

it’s great that Ontario will become its own region within the IPRA, adding, “I’m sad to see the ORA come to an end since it’s been an amazing rodeo asso- ciation and has made what rodeo is in Ontario. I’m happy about the amalgamation but sad at the same time.”

The board will continue working alongside

Rawhide Rodeo to put on the Ontario Finals Rodeo every year. The board wrote their goals are to grow the Ontario membership base and to offer greater money at finals. The ORA wrote, “We are looking forward to an-

other great season and putting on the 60th Ontario Fi- nals Rodeo this fall!”
