Santa Rosa, CA. ~ Let’s journey back in time to a place called Arpi- no, Italy. T e year is 106 BC when Marcus Tul- lius Cicero is born. May- be his par- ents grate- fully sigh: “Dum spiro, spero…” (a phrase I cherish now but felt
cranky about when learning Latin in high school) meaning:
“While
I breathe, I hope.” No one ever loved Latin more than our teacher.
As mean
teenagers can be, we felt she was as old as that hor- rible Caesar who kept marching troops across the Rubicon. Ah yes, live and learn. Cicero’s writings are
worth cherishing. A man who can write: “If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need” and “A room without books is like a body without a soul” –and not without humor: “Times are bad. Children no longer obey their
parents, and everyone is writing a book!”—Such a man would make a great friend. Happy Father’s Day to every father
on this planet! Most of today’s par- ents share responsibilities by active, daily caring for their children than they did in years gone by. Perhaps that is why I keep thinking about some unusual men whose life jour- neys led them to care for thousands of children. Hermann Gmeiner was born on
June 23, 1919 in Vorarlberg, Austria into a big family of farmers. Very young when his mother died, his oldest sister, Elsa, took charge of the family. Gmeiner lived by the philoso- phy that there are no winners aſt er wars, only survivors. His horrifi c experiences, witnessing so many war orphans and homeless children, convinced him to be- come a child welfare worker aſt er WWII.
Gmeiner ended his medical stud- ies in 1949 when he established his SOS-Children’s Village Association and built the fi rst Children’s Village (Kinderdorf) in Imst, in Austria’s

It’s been raining for days now and my husband seems very depressed by it. He keeps standing by the window, star- ing. If it continues, I’m going to have to let him in. ~
Barista Nightmare: “Hi, can I get a half regular- half decaf, soy latte with extra foam and cinnamon but only if the cinnamon is organic and instead of all soy milk, can you just put in about a tablespoon of 2% milk? I’m lactose intoler- ant but I still love the taste of regular milk. Wait, make it whole milk. Why not, right? Wait, do you have almond milk? You do? Okay, I want an almond milk latte with caramel and choco- late sauce, extra foam, but no cinnamon on this one because it will fi ght with the taste of the caramel.”
