Alex Chalk MPfor Cheltenham Thismonth with...

GOING FORWARD…

With the election on our doorstep CheltenhamMPAlex Chalk outlines his achievements so far and what is next

General elections inCheltenhamare always close. This year, support for TheresaMay and theConservatives willbemore important than ever, both for the future of our country and of our town. Iwent intopoliticswith a simple

goal: to putmyself among the challenges facing our community and country and play a part in their solution. That’swhatdrivesme everyday. Sincemy election as yourMP just

two years ago, I’mproudofwhat has been achievedforCheltenham. After long campaigns in Parliamentwith the brilliant support of localpeople togetherwe’vewon £22million Government investment to turn Cheltenhaminto a national hub for cyber excellence. We’ve changed the lawto protect victims of stalking following the ordeal of aCheltenham GP.Andwe’ve securedincreased investment in our localNHS:more cash forCheltenham’sA&E to addresswinterpressures and a new state of-the-art radiotherapy cancer treatmentmachine. As for investment to keepour local

economy strong,we’ve secured a pledge of £255million to address the AirBalloon pinch-point, aswell as more trains toBristol.

44 JUNE 2017 THECHELTONIAN Mental health issues are

particularly important tome, and I campaignedsuccessfully for Cheltenhamto receive extra investment for both local peri-natal mental health care, and improved resources for babiesbornwith tongue tie.And in theHouse of Commons, it isCheltenhamthat has led the nationaldebate on the impact of socialmedia on adolescent mental health – somethingwhich socialmediaplatforms need to do far more to face up to. But this election is about our

country too of course. There is a clear choice: a strongConservative Government led byTheresaMay, providing stability and leadershipat this critical time in our country’s

history; or a hung Parliament led by JeremyCorbyn, proppedup by the otherparties in a coalitionof chaos. If JeremyCorbynwins, ordinary workingpeoplewill be the oneswho pay - for an unfundedLabourwish- listwhichwill crash our economy and take our countryback to the edge of bankruptcy. Crucially aConservative vote

locallywill also keepCheltenham where it belongs – at the heart of the country’s decisionmaking. We have come so far in two short years, and I ampassionate about finishing the job. Let’s secure the brightestpossible

future forCheltenhamand for all thosewho call this special town home.
