A VIBRANT village with a rich history, Headcorn continues to develop and move with the times.
Situated on the A274 between Maidstone and Tenterden, the village is one of the largest in the area. Dating back to at least Roman times, Headcorn built its prosperity on the weaving industry which began to thrive in the 14th century. This is reflected by the beautiful buildings of that time such as the Old Cloth Hall.
Nowadays, the busy High Street has a good range of independent businesses including shops and pubs and there are some beautiful old houses in the oldest part near the church. It all adds up to the perfect place to stop and
browse, have a meal or a coffee and enjoy wandering around. In the heart of the High Street is the Krishna Indian restaurant, established in 1990. It is housed in a beautiful 15th century Tudor building with low oak beams that instantly create a warm ambience. The cuisine is mainly north Indian. Liz, the proprietor, who has run
the restaurant for more than 25 years, says: "We do try to cater for everyone. Bestsellers include Kerala chicken, cooked with popped mustard seeds, curry leaf and coconut milk, and lamb bhuna, made with fresh Kentish lamb sourced from our local butcher, in a thick flavoursome sauce. Our light and healthy section is also
very popular. So call us to book your table and don't forget to bring your voucher!"
Headcorn’s new village hall is well-used by local groups and organisations and is the home of a popular Country Market on the second Saturday of each month. Stalls include garden plants, jams and preserves, fresh produce and needlecrafts. Just outside the village is Headcorn aerodrome which lies on the Biddenden road. It was first used in the 1920s and served as an advanced landing ground for Canadians, and then Americans in World War II. Today, it is a popular centre for pleasure flights and parachuting, with many sky- divers raising money for charities.
