Tillso Advantage “

Again we cannot rule out a wet end to the season

week after the fl ag leaf spray but the precise timing is important in this case.

Any wheat crop where Hag-

berg number is important will need to be monitored for wheat orange blossom midge, on suscep- tible varieties. Since the midges can move in as soon as boots split this may have already happened but later-developing crops may still be susceptible (i.e. pre-fl ow- ering) and should be checked from early ear emergence.

Aphids If warm dry weather prevails, then aphids may move onto ce- real ears so look out for these. Again, with the dry weath- er nitrogen uptake was compro- mised. Milling wheat crops may have already received suffi cient extra nitrogen to boost grain pro- tein.

If planning to use foliar urea

sprays for this remember that ap- plications can scorch and should be made post-fl owering, when the foliage has aged a little and is therefore less ‘soft’, and prefer- ably in the early morning or late evening.

Spring barley crops should receive their T2 fungicide at fl ag leaf-awns emergence, if the T1 was timely then disease pres- sure should be low and the char- acteristic low fungicide doses for this crop would also be relevant

at T2. Many crops were sown in late April and there may only be time for one fungicide on these, given the low disease pressure and rapid development typical of later sowings.

Rust

The second fungicide in oats (around panicle emergence) is usually routine and rust-ori- entated. Crown rust may soon start to develop at this stage – and can cause severe yield losses and hence lead to large respons- es to fungicides. Spring oat crops usually re- quire just one fungicide, around GS32. Winter and spring bean crops

may also have had their fungicide programmes cut back but bean rust can develop in dry weather so check for this and treat at the normal T2 timing if in any doubt. Spring oilseed rape should be

checked regularly for pollen bee- tle from stem extension onwards: these pests can invade spring rape crops before the green bud stage and are far more damaging than in winter crops. Pea crops should be checked

for pests, pea aphid and thrips in particular can invade at this time of year. Crops should also receive a fungicide at the late fl owering pod set stage, though treating be- fore any lodging occurs is the im- portant timing consideration.
