MIDDLE EAST • SAUDI ARABIA Year to remember for Hutchison Ports Dammam


It has been something of a year of firsts for Hutchison Ports Dammam, Saudi Arabia, the multi-purpose deep-water facility situated at the King Abdulaziz Port of Dammam.


Specifically, it operates and manages the container terminal and offer stevedoring of ro-ro and reefer vessels as well.


In October last year, Hutchison Ports Dammam accomplished a productivity milestone by handling 20m teu since the start of operations in 1997. The achievement, it said ‘underlines its continuous growth and long-term commitment to the Kingdom.’


In addition, a new milestone was set on 21 February when Hutchison Ports Dammam successfully discharged three units of out-of-gauge cargoes weighing 152 tonnes by Zamil’s heavylift floating crane, ex CMA CGM Rigoletto, that runs the WAX Service.

Other highlights include a maiden call of new feeder service by Milaha (Qatar Navigation). Milaha’s KDX feeder service will provide a faster and direct liner & feeder service bridging the rice importer in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with the main rice supplier in Kandla Port, India with a cost effective solution for their supply chain.

Expansion project powering forward at RSGT


Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT) has completed the first stage of its large-scale expansion project at its flagship container terminal at Jeddah Islamic Port.


Jens Floe, managing director of RSGT, has said that some SAR2.1bn ($560m) has been invested in the terminal, and that the growth is part of the country’s wider plans and 2030 national vision.


Addressing RSGT’s role in improving the industry, Floe said: ‘Our role is to help bring down costs, and we are investing in our processes, our people and technology to do that.


‘This allows exports to become more efficient, making the wider Saudi export market more effective. At the same time we are reducing the time for cargo imports, benefiting end users in Saudi Arabia.’

the simultaneous berthing of two mega vessels. In addition, the depth alongside the extended quay is 18mtr.


Dredging was completed in October with the deepening of the approach channel to 17mtr and the enlargement of the vessel swing basin to accommodate largest container vessels

The second stage of the expansion is the extension and deepening of the R4 berth to accommodate vessels up to 367mtr in length.


Meanwhile, four new quay cranes are currently in manufacture in ZPMC in China and are expected to be delivered during October 2017.
