Only a few years back Liquefied Natural Gas was widely viewed as the clean energy source of the future because of its lower emissions as compared with other fossil fuels.
Since then the LNG market been depressed by a global supply glut not entirely unconnected with the lower price of oil. But with global demand, and oil prices, now edging up again there seems some light at the end of the tunnel for this shipping segment – as indeed is the case for dry bulk (see p.9) and containers (p.13).
LNG as a marine fuel certainly seems to be an idea whose time has come, as testified to by a host of new designs for LNG-fuelled vessels, as Marcus Hand points out in his article on p.6.
Meanwhile, our cover photo depicts the world’s first ice-class LNG carrier belonging to Sovcomflot, pictured undergoing recent sea trials in the Arctic ahead of serving Russia’s giant new Yamal LNG project (see p.19).
Preservation of the Arctic ecosystem is of paramount concern to the whole Yamal project and development of the Northern Sea Route.
On the subject of environmental concerns, you may have noticed that Seatrade Maritime Review has gone green in 2017.
Many publishers are making their commitment to the environment by producing sustainable print publications and Seatrade decided to reduce the carbon impact of our printing by using 100% recycled paper, starting with the March edition. This and all future issues are following suit.
In addition, SMR’s cover is prepared using a water based aqueous seal, so there is very little chemical waste and this is a much more eco- friendly option than a laminate (previously used).
What does this mean for you?
Other than holding a sustainable product in your hands, there is no change to the structure of the magazine or content.
Happy reading. Bob Jaques, Editor
