CAR CLUBS Capital Corvette Club Over 40 years young and still going strong.

GIUSEPPE CASTRUCCI

Many of us have often caught ourselves gazing at yet another amazing Corvette, for the lucky ones who own one the ownership has brought many years of thrilling memories and joy.

In 1953 a concept car known as the EX-122 was shown at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel during the GM Motorama car show. It would later be named the “Corvette” after a highly maneuverable naval escort ship. Since that date, this iconic automobile with its ever changing style, increasing horse power and 7 generations of development has captured the hearts and minds of many a young man and woman. It is no surprise that we have a Capital Corvette Club. Established in 1975, this great group of people have been enjoying and promoting the ownership of this heartthrob vehicle. As luck would have it, I had a chance to sit down with John Scapillati and get a real sense of the passion the owners have for their cars.

First and foremost was the vol- ume of events that they organize so their members can fully appre-

ciate and drive their cars. To put it in John’s words, “We have both formal and informal events that range from cruise nights, car shows, parades and pot lucks. We participate as a club in major events such as the Ottawa Classic Custom Car Show at the EY Centre in April, the Merrickville Car Show in July, a Lake George, New York Weekend tour and of course the Corvette’s at Carlisle in August.” The club also likes to join up with other car clubs across the valley such as the HWY 43 Club Cruise Night in Kemptville, Race the Runway in Smiths Falls and joining Track Days at Calabogie. The events usually take place from January to October, and through- out the year they like to have pot luck dinners to keep in contact with members.

The club currently has between 65 and 85 members. Within this group, they have a number of mem- bers who belong to the National Corvette Restorers Society. In
