able to penetrate your clothing and somehow get under your hat to chew on your vulnerable flesh. As someone once said: “They are like black flies on steroids!”

After getting back from the bush, that same afternoon my wife Ann happened to notice some deerfly patches

sitting on the table outside the cabin door. The package advertising indi- cated the 2” by 6” strips Stop Biting Deerflies.

So, with nothing to lose I decided why not give them a try!

The patches are, typically, skin coloured and constructed with a sticky substance on each side of the strip. One side of the strip is attached to your hat and the other side acts as a fly catcher. Since deerflies generally attack you from above, after circling your head a number of times, the strips are best applied to the rear side of a baseball cap. This is where the flies usually land and become immobilized after becoming attached to the sticky surface on the patch.Since I wasn’t really sure if the patches would work, I cut one in half and placed it on my hat to give it a try. Much to my surprise it really seemed to work! In fact, the strips can be effective for several days if there is enough landing area to capture an unsuspecting fly. Don’t place them too low on the hat though as they are just as effective at catching your hair. After sending a picture of the

captured flies to my cousin, he told me he keeps a package of strips in his golf bag. They are probably very effective when hunting and fishing during deerfly season as well.

At a buck apiece, they are

relatively inexpensive to purchase. You can generally buy them in packages of 4 or 12 from your favourite outdoors store. So, the next time you enter the summer bush, be prepared with this helpful invention from some resourceful outdoorsman!
