Thought of the week... I am no sexist. I owe my life to

a woman (my mother) and so I have no difficulty in affirming that behind every great man there must be a great woman. (Although Maryon Pearson’s version is better. But it would now seem that behind many a living man there could be woman doctor, because researchers at Harvard have concluded that the sex of the doctor can have an influence on the number of patients that die. Indeed, they have calculated that approximately 32,000 lives a year would be saved in the US

if male doctors behaved more like their female counterparts. It is suggested that female doctors

keep more patients alive because of the way they respond to the evidence. Now that’s an amazing conclusion given the fact that men have often thought as first century Judaism did. The ancient historian Josephus tells us that in his day women could not be called as witnesses ‘because of the levity and impetuosity of their sex’. This, of course, is but a version of the common ancient (and not so ancient) prejudice that women are more easily swayed by their emotions

and all to ready to jump to irrational conclusions. And this reminded me that the

very first witnesses to the resurrection of Jesus were women too. And in spite of the disparaging culture of their day the first Christians were quite willing to say so, unapologetically. And in doing so, they have provided us with a very powerful reason for trusting their claim that Jesus did rise from the dead. For no one would have been stupid enough to say that women were key witnesses unless it was the truth. Rob James (Media Consultant Evangelical Alliance)
