What You Need to Know About New Engine Oils

WRITTEN BY ROBERT T. PUDLEWSKI

L 52 School Transportation News • SEPTEMBER 2017

ast fall, we published information on the planned release of two new motor oil specifications, CK-4 and FA-4. Since December, the American Petroleum Institute (API) has licensed about 400 CK-4 and more than 40 FA-4 oils submitted for licensing by oil

marketers. According to the API, more oil marketers are expected to add oils meeting

the new standards to provide product that meets the needs of the changing diesel engine technologies and alternative fuel engines, as well as to protect the various engine types currently in operation. Most large school bus operations serviced by bulk oil sales and supply distributors are becoming aware of these oils and are planning to introduce them into their fleets. But other private and public bus fleets not purchasing in bulk or as frequently as the larger fleets may not been introduced yet to the new oil formulation and its application into their vehicle-specific lube, oil and filter replacement schedule. Operators and school bus maintenance technicians need to know how to manage these new oils in their shops. API CK-4 oil is intended for diesel engines previously using API’s CJ-4

oils. API FA-4 oils, meanwhile, are intended for most newer engines, specifi- cally 2017 model-year and beyond. FA-4 and CK-4 Specifications will take two separate paths. To meet regu- lations for increased fuel economy and reduced emissions, 2017 model-year and newer diesels will rely on a combination of engine and unique oil tech-
