become standard offerings in the consumer automotive market. Even though Tomas Built Buses recently began offering this, I am surprised there are very few takers especially when 70 percent of school bus crashes happen as result of rear ending or hitting stationary objects, according to Byte- Curve data analysis. Avoiding the Next Vehicle Breakdown—No doubt, performing thorough preventive maintenance and oil changes by well-trained technicians are the best ways to ensure safety of the vehicle. But due to technology advancements, components like engines, transmission and brake systems now oper- ate as computers inside the bus. Te only way to diagnose these is via a holistic understanding and timely analysis of all the incoming signals. Tis technology is currently available from Navistar via its OnCommand Connection platform but still has a long way to go to being adopted into daily school district operations. Data Analytics—Last but not the least: Data, data and data. Every device or technology provider is giving access to more and more data every day. Most customers are overwhelmed and find it hard to leverage this available data to make their operations safer or more efficient. Tis can only happen through an effective data analytics platform that can turn data into useful and actionable information. Otherwise, they are just numbers on a spreadsheet. As you all know, automotive technology is moving at lightning speed. We are seeing progress every day ranging from connected vehicles to self-driving vehicles to mobility as a service. Te latest devel- opment in this evolution is the successful test of “Hyperloop” by Elon Musk. Te goal of this magnetic levitation train is to travel from Los Angeles to San Francisco in 30 minutes. My point is that evolution of technology around us is happening and won’t wait for anyone. Te school bus industry has no choice but to adapt. Tis requires a industry-wide technology focus and lead- ers to step out front to provide unified direction for vendors and operators, alike. ●
