Technology Options Versus Business Solutions

y fellow panelists and I recently presented on the future of technology in school buses at STN EXPO in Reno, Nevada. My initial impression, when talking with my peers from both the public and private sectors, was that


somehow technology providers miss the mark and misunderstand the needs of their customers. Listening to many vendors during the trade show made me question this assumption. In many cases, there could be a disconnect between what’s available versus what’s needed. After giving due thought, I wondered who drives the future of technological solutions for the school bus industry. I couldn’t think of any forum, committee or focus group taking the lead on working with users and technology providers to evaluate technological ad- vancements in the transportation industry and to set the roadmap. With that thought, I would like to address some of the challenges and opportunities in our industry, specifically the availability of on- board devices on buses. In recent years, there has been a huge influx of new devices for school buses, but others have been around for almost a decade now. GPS has become a standard feature in most school buses. Even though these devices offer tons of data, most customers still struggle with understanding and making use of it to make their operations safer and more efficient. Many school bus operators simply use the vehicle location feature but have yet to tap into others like managing
