ues. Griffith said school districts point to improved stu- dent and teacher morale that results in better attendance for both groups. But schools also use four-day weeks as a way not to give raises. “Te four-day week is a positive incentive for teachers and other staff,” explained Griffith. “(Districts) can say, ‘Look, we can’t give you a raise, but you’re getting the same salary, the same benefits, and getting Fridays off. Tey use it as a bonus, and once you start, it’s difficult to go back.”
Tough there are no formal studies to support his
assertion, Griffith added that anecdotal evidence is rural parents “love the four-day week,” he said. “In suburban or urban environments where both parents work, having alternative daycare on Fridays is an issue.” Still, many schools are opting for the shorter school
week, even after studies have shown that the original ar- gument–saving money–was proven wrong. Akron, Col- orado, is one example. Beginning last month, the school district, which is in a rural, agricultural area with about 360 students, followed a local trend by implementing a four-day a week. While the change won’t save a lot of money, survey results from last school year indicated to officials that parents were in favor of the shorter week. “Te shorter week doesn’t affect our driver’s salaries,”
said Nancy Bullard, Akron’s head of transportation. “Tey sign a letter of assignment to work 12 months for a set amount. What did change for them is that the cal- endar now has seven in-service days for teachers. Instead of having a day off, they are now required to come in and have a driver safety meeting, and then they’ll proba- bly clean their buses.”
