Ensuring Facts From Fiction

Te following comments are responses to a School Transportation News online

article in June addressing an inaccurate CBS News report on an alleged lack of industry oversight of school bus drivers. Te segment by Kris Van Cleave and producer Kristen Towey provided uncited and erroneous figures on school bus passenger injuries and claimed on average, via a simple internet search, that one school bus driver is arrested nationwide each week for offenses ranging from driving under the influence to sexual predator crimes. CBS failed to point out that such a figure represents less than 0.01 percent of all school bus drivers na- tionwide and neglected to make other key distinctions about school bus safety.

“Tank you for providing an alternative perspective on this CBS report,

your statistics are valid. But it’s unfortunate because parents only need to hear one bad story about a bad bus driver - one bad event instills in par- ents great cause for concern. However indirectly I’d lay much of the blame squarely at the feet of parents and local communities. Children have to get bused to school yet budgets do not allow for good compensation for drivers. Working conditions are horrible - think about the worse Sunday drive you ever took with 5 kids in the car, now make it 35 with kids partying, running around, getting on, plus traffic and not a small SUV but a huge bus [sounds delightful huh]. But often times efforts to pay more to drivers will cost taxpayer money and then everyone squawks. Clearly if people think their children’s welfare is worth it, they’d be willing to improve the conditions for recruitment of drivers. — Warren Hawkes Comment at STNOnline.com

“Tank you STN for setting the record straight. Mr. Van Cleave did a very poor job in researching his facts and his experts…well I will leave that for an offline discussion!” — Alfred Karam, Director of Transportation Shenendehowa (New York) Central School District
