Unified School District Fleet maintenance department is comprised of eight mechanics


under the supervision and direction of Rafael Guardiola. Steve Daigle, the district’s director of transportation, said the mainte- nance team has operated efficiently under a minimal budget for the past several years with an aging fleet to maintain average costs of $3,130 per year per bus, excluding labor, with the average cost per bus for the past school year falling to $2,250. Te 2015-2016 school year only encountered five issues out of 159 school buses, as identified by the Arizona Department of Public Safety inspec- tion team. Daigle mentioned that all issues were corrected onsite. He added that the maintenance team’s diligence led to a decrease of cost per unit per year of the white fleet from a high of $1,221


to the low of $489. Drivers communicate results of pre-, mid- and post-trip inspec-


tions directly to the repair team for assessment problems. Each mechanic then logs the activity to ensure accuracy of accounting time, problem areas and facilitating analysis. Guardiola highlighted that the frontlines of school transpor-


tation operations are in the garage. Dysart’s fleet maintenance department was also the proud recipient of 2012 Leland Larson Quality Award presented by NAPT. Guardiola described his team as family, with staff always fervent
