Gary Butler | Fleet Manager | GG & C Bus Company

GG&C Bus Company provides school bus services to Washington County in Pennsylvania. When given the chance to point out an outstanding member of his team, General Manager Kyle Templin

had this answer: “Gary Butler is by far the best maintenance manager I have ever had in the transportation industry!” Coming from working with transit and coach buses, Butler found his niche at GG&C, where he has been working for the past 39 years. Te various tasks that he and his team accomplish in a day keeps a fleet of 150-plus vehicles going, and the lives of many people running. “Tere is rarely a problem that Gary cannot troubleshoot on

his own,” says Templin. Tat’s a skill Butler has honed over the years, commenting, “I have always loved getting my hands dirty, tearing [things] apart to see what makes them tick.”

For GG&C, Butler does a little of everything—driving, maintenance, training, and management. All of this is done with what Templin brands Butler’s characteristic “work ethic, attitude, mechanical aptitude and overall coolness.” Starting his day early, Butler first ensures that all the buses

are road-ready for the morning routes. If all the drivers are not available, he will “jump in the seat and go” himself. Next, he lines up buses to be worked on, always ready to provide the “leadership and mentoring [that] keeps our maintenance shop one of the best in the business,” according to Templin. Te rest of the day has Butler working on the maintenance budget, checking that the garages he oversees have everything they need, making sure the drivers have their routes for the next day, repairing buses in the garage and managing inventory. “In the bus business,” says Butler, “it is never boring.” His satisfaction is, at the end of the day, “knowing everyone is safe and sound.”
