BABS: Bag A Bargain System - NEW £12 THRESHOLD (+ 5 times unsold)

Unsolds: The ‘Unsolds’ list is published on-line at our website the Friday evening (13th January) after the auction closes. We physically mail your results that afternoon and e-mail your results early evening. Simultaneously we publish the unsold list of all lots available at 80% of estimate, and the on-line order form. Orders for unsolds can also be accepted by fax, or by telephone commencing Monday 16th January 11a.m onwards but getting through may prove difficult in the early part of the week. You can also e-mail unsolds orders but the on-line unsolds form is better structured and use of this is strongly recommended. Please be sure to scroll down and complete the ‘captcha’ to submit your request. To give you an idea of the popularity of unsold lots; we now receive literally hundreds of orders totalling in excess of £50,000 in the few weeks they are available – till we close off for preparation of the next auction. Please be aware that orders for unsolds are processed after the main auction so there are usually up to 2,000 clients sendings to process before we can start to process your unsolds orders. They are, however, processed in order of receipt so placing your order early may prove beneficial as they are offered on a 1st come 1st served basis.


On-line Bid Form: The on-line bid form accessed via our website is incredibly efficient and from a few hundred bid forms submitted in this way a couple of years ago – we now receive upwards of 1,000 submissions per auction. This form permits you to ‘build’ you bid form. It is important to understand that we do not receive your on-line bid form until you scroll down and enter the ‘captcha’ to submit it. We ‘auto’ receipt all on-line bid forms received and confirm receipt of e-mail bids. NO receipt means we have not received your bid form.


Credit cards: Unlike other major stamp auctions – UPA continues a policy of NO extra charge for use of Mastercard or Visa whatsoever – however clients notifying us after the auction – due to the immense number of bidders, we regret our staff can no longer divert their attention from despatching lots to other pre-paid clients to locate your lots and send them in the first despatch week. Post auction credit card submissions are your privilege and willingly offered as a client service/point of contact – but invoices may be processed and lots despatched in the second despatch week out of sheer time necessity.


Telephone Calls after the auction: Due to the incredible number of telephone calls we receive after the auction – all of which are welcomed but interrupt our team striving to pack 1,900+ parcels and despatch your winnings to you – we are forced to limit telephone calls during the first despatch week – so that we can also answer the 500+ e-mails that have arrived by the time the telephones start to ring ... we’ve created a monster auction, we have to admit it takes some handling – please bear with us while we strive to produce our best for you. Telephones are answered on the following basis:


First Despatch week:


MONDAY 16th January ➙ FRIDAY 20th January Telephone Hours: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.


Second Despatch week:

Here are a few thoughts, tips and suggestions which may assist old and new friends to improve their bidding success and experience with UPA:


Perhaps the first thing to understand is that unlike a conventional auction, because UPA auctions are processed upon computer – you can enter your bids in any sequence so that if you are on a ‘budget’ your top priority becomes your first lot to bid on and so on. So you can bid on lot # 20,000 first and lot # 2 second and any sequence. State your ‘limit’ on your bid form and UPA will stop purchasing for you the moment that your spending limit has been reached.


• We strongly recommend clients on a budget to bid on more lots in their order of priority and enter their ‘spend’ limit. So often collectors say “if only I had known this”.


Either/or bids are welcomed ... just enter the first lot and your maximum bid on one line (maximum only utilised if other underbids necessitate) ... enter ‘OR’ on the next line and the alternative lot and amount bid on the following line. If you wish ‘bracket’ the 3 lines and write in the office column ‘1 lot only’.


Note – often the second ‘or’ lot sells for less than the first. You could bid on the later lot 1st and the earlier lot # 2nd.


Bid Steps: Many clients bid exactly the amount of the estimate. In the event that equal bids are received, the lot sells for that amount to the earliest equal bidder.


When you receive your results if the lot sold for the same amount as you bid it will have been sold to the earlier bidder for the amount you bid (a tied bid).


• You can do two things to increase your chance of success: bid more (naturally) and use ‘break a tie’ increments on your bid form by selecting 1, 2 or 3 ‘bid steps’ increments.


So many collectors bid ‘round’ amounts. Avoid bidding figures such as £10, £50, £100 ... use tie breaking ‘bid steps’ or bid an extra 5% or more for greater chance of success. Please don’t state bid an extra X% - please bid in actual GBP amounts


Sometimes you ask us about the ‘Gallery’. The Gallery is a blend of late and additional high value lots. We cross reference the ‘main’ catalogue to advise when more material from a country/area is presented in the Gallery.
