Developing the Young Workforce Employability course

Stuart Patrick presents Kirsty Campbell and Aaron Walker with their ILM Certificates

Intensive programme to equip pupils with the necessary skills for the world of work P

upils in their senior phase of school have just completed a four-day employability course provided by Developing the Young Workforce

Glasgow and accredited by the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM). Twelve pupils from three schools were

involved in the pilot programme, which involved highly interactive and intensive activities. Te schools involved were Notre Dame High School, All Saints Secondary and St Paul’s High School. In today’s competitive marketplace, it is

important that school pupils are equipped with the right employability skills to succeed in the workplace. In total, nine out of 10 employers state that employability skills are the top

atributes they look for when hiring (CBI, 2016), and more than half of employers say they have turned down candidates because they lacked employability skills and the right personality and behaviours (Training Journal, 2016). Designed through close collaboration and

input from leading organisations, and accredited by the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM), Te Employability Skills Programme® is a highly interactive, intense, small group-based programme, built around the concept of “a typical week in the office”. Te programme, hosted by Alec Pearson,

from Pearson Communication, prepared pupils for entry into the workplace, by addressing the key employability skills required by

organisations, which included modules on effective presentations, brand development (personality and behaviours), working in teams, assertiveness, how to excel in the workplace and time management. For each module real-life workplace experiences were discussed together with practical advice on how to confidently navigate the world of work. Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive, Glasgow

Chamber of Commerce, presented the students with an ILM certificate on completion of the programme, all of whom expressed positive feedback from their experience. One pupil said: “It has really changed my

perception of the world of work. I have learned a lot and I believe I can put what I have learned into practice.”
