Each issue we ask a major business figure what technology they use to gather the information they need to keep their finger on the pulse
When time is tight, turn to Twitter for all the intel
...but give yourself space to think about things that will make a real difference
WHAT TECHNOLOGY (FROM GADGETS TO SOFTWARE, INCLUDING APPS) MAKES YOUR WORKING LIFE EASIER?
Apple Notes is very simple but allows me to manage To Do lists simply across devices. iPad is simple, beautiful, portable and good for watching favourite TV shows when I’m travelling! SLACK is a great collaboration tool, especially for remote workers, in start-up environments. Twiter edits the internet for me – invaluable time saver.
WHAT WEBSITES/APPS/MAGAZINES/ NEWSPAPERS DO YOU TURN TO FOR BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE?
Twiter can do it all – if you follow the right people and brands it’s prety much all there. Skiſt is great for innovation and strategy related to travel and tourism. Te Times has increasingly good commentary/opinion on Scotland’s political and economic landscape.
WHAT BOOK (S) SHOULD EVERYONE IN BUSINESS BE READING?
I am not a big one for business books but I think Eating Te Big Fish: How Challenger Brands Can Compete against Brand Leaders by Adam Morgan is timeless. I am also interested in the social enterprise, as a way of doing mainstream business, so would recommend Te Shed Tat Fed A Million Children by Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow – a great Scot.
WHAT DO YOU DO THAT HELPS YOU BOOST YOUR PRODUCTIVITY OR SAVE TIME?
Deal with emails from the day before, first thing the morning aſter. Space to think, at least once a week, about the things that will really make a big difference.
WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?
It’s a well-used quote from Peter Drucker – “Culture eats strategy for breakfast”. We all love strategising but if everyone believes in what they are doing, knows the part they have to play and enjoys their work, good things will happen.
