Shiba Park is a short walk from our hotel. Ranks of bicycles stand neatly where commuters left them, unlocked, as they hurried off to work. We’re in the heart of the city, yet the park’s Buddist San’en-zan Zōjō-ji temple is the picture of tranquil- ity. We linger in its peacefulness, before walking on. At a busy intersection, we pull out a map just as a young couple approaches us. “We’ll help you says the young man, we like to practice our English.” I detect a slight Japanese accent, but otherwise his English is pretty good. I tell him we’re looking for the boat cruise down the river and he points behind us. “Just head down here, pass under the subway and turn right. Hinode pier is just at the foot of the road.” “The foot of the road,” I think, “that’s pretty conversational for someone who needs to practice their English.”
I had never thought of Tokyo as having water taxis, but it makes sense, sitting as it does on Tokyo Bay. We’d been riding the subway all week, astounded at how easy it is to follow directions posted only in Japanese. Clearly they don’t want anyone getting lost in this city of nearly 14 million. Today we will cruise along the Sumida River and
