Trip of a Lifetime, Travelling Outside the Box

2015, that I met my traveling companion at the Toronto airport to begin our journey to South America. My good friend Paul Walsh is a seasoned traveler and a true adventurer. If not for him this would never have happened. I had the pleasure of traveling through Asia with Paul about 7 years ago for the wedding of his brother-in-law and my best buddy. But then again, that’s another story. Our guide, or should I say bible, for the whole trip was Lonely Planet, South America on a Shoestring Travel Guide. It was how we chose hotels and interesting things to do. We used the cost of beer as a measuring stick in determining value for money and everywhere we went locals gave us some sound advice in travelling throughout South America: use common

sense, don’t flash money, avoid shady characters, and leave jewelry at home. Guyana: We had already booked


our tickets to Trinidad, since that is where we had flown into the previous year, but in hindsight it wasn’t the best plan, and then on to Guyana. Formerly British Guyana, with a population of 800,000. We stayed in the capital, Georgetown; population 135,000. Now that I have been, I wouldn’t recommNow that I have been, I wouldn’t recommend it highly for traveling, except for the highlight of our stay: Kaieteur Falls. We took a very scenic and interesting 12 seater plane ride for $150 US to the falls. It is the world’s highest straight vertical drop waterfall of 741 feet with 136,000 litres per second rushing over. The name
