No fooling around: Sputtergotch toy owners working hard to be the best

Sometimes all it takes is a creative idea to spark something special — especially when it comes to creating fun for children. This is the case for the uniquely-named Sputtergotch Toy Company and its tight, unique focus. The quickly-popular business earned the title of Best Specialty Retailer in the 2015 Best of Swift Current promotion undertaken by the Prairie Post. Garry Koebel and his wife Kristen Simonson opened The Sputtergotch Toy Company in May of 2011 and currently have an appreciated quartet of employees on staff. Koebel was thrilled their business was

chosen as a favourite in Swift Current. “We are very excited to win this category. It is always a major compliment to be recognized for the hard work you put in, so it definitely means a lot,” explains Koebel. “We have received a lot of support from Swift Current and many of the surrounding communities and we couldn’t be more appreciative. In return, we contribute as much back to the community as we can through community support and non-profit sponsorships and provide the best service and product offerings we can to our loyal customers.

“One regular comment we get from out-of-town customers is they can’t believe there is a store with the selection like we have in a city this size. We work with over 100 different suppliers globally

to bring as much variety and uniqueness to our customers as possible. People in smaller cities like ours deserve variety too, and if they can find it locally it is even better.”

A member of the Chamber of Commerce since they opened, the Sputtergotch crew want to provide the best sales and service they can. However, they know new, fun toys

which will please youngsters of all ages is what keeps them busy. This year will continue to be a time of new additions. “We are constantly making changes at our shop with new unique product lines to keep things fresh and interesting,” says Koebel. “We also get great advice from our customers who come across great product ideas they think would be great for the store. This feedback is very important to us and provides us with great suggestions on how we can improve the shopping experience for our customers. We prefer to be proactive when it comes to change, so for certain we have a few irons in the fire for 2015 and 2016.” Sputtergotch’s owners and staff love doing business in Swift Current and the southwest. The business community and the clientele are always a pleasure to deal with and they can’t imagine anywhere better to be. “We couldn’t think of a better place to open a business and raise a family than in Swift Current — both very much go hand-

in-hand,” explains Koebel. “It is a vibrant business environment with significant growth over the past few years. “We wanted our store in the heart of

downtown, and with the many downtown initiatives such as Market Square, Main Street Saskatchewan Program and others, we are excited about Swift Current’s future.” Koebel acknowledges the economy is certainly going through some challenges and it will no doubt impact all businesses in one way or another. He says being in

an area where there are cyclical industries (i.e. petroleum), the region has been through it before, and is confident the Swift Current business community will weather the downturn. Sputtergotch was a winner in last year’s Best of Swift Current survey. It tells Koebel and the staff they are on the right track when it comes to overall consistency. “Being chosen in this category for a second time feels great. We must be doing something right,” he says. “And, a big thank-you to those that voted for us.”
