THE METROPOLITAN OFFICERS MESS

T

he Metropolitan Officers Mess set the tone for the rest of the

Autumn season with its excellent Met Mess dinner and entertainment on 18th September at the City Grange Hotel near Tower Bridge. Around 250 members attended and enjoyed a Champagne Reception followed by an excellent meal. After the dinner, a cheque for £5,000 for the MMC, which had been raised through the efforts of the Metropolitan Grand Lodge Golf Society, was presented to RW Bro. Russell Race, MetGM, by W. Bros Bob Hancock, PGSD, and W. Bro Indu Chatrath, PGStB. Brethren may wish to note that this was the first Met Mess where the MGLGS tie was worn - as can be seen modelled by Bro. Bob in the accompanying photo! It was then time to be entertained

by John Sergeant, the ex-BBC political commentator, television personality and journalist, now latterly turned dancer-extraordinaire on 'Strictly come Dancing'. He gave a sparklingly witty speech, interspersed with serious anecdotes about his time at the BBC, including some revealing 'insider' opinions. He described his part, both planned and inadvertent, in the gripping and then still developing story of the de- selection of Margaret Thatcher as the Leader of the Conservative Party in 1990. He went on to describe in a very laconic and engaging way, how his experiences on "Strictly" had given him a whole new group that admired him for his physical rather than intellectual nature! He then took questions from the floor, in a quick-fire and amusingly responsive way. It was an excellent event and the organiser, W. Bro Tony Hawley, PGStB and his team are to be congratulated. Members, like arena, may wish to place a note in their diaries that the next Mess is a lunch on 24th March 2015!
