REMEMBRANCE 2014 - POETRY ON THE UNDERGROUND
T
he MetGL Office was approached on October
W. Bro Derek Wood with non-masons Messrs. Jonathan Byrne and Ian Roach, both TfL staff members.
23rd by Covent Garden Tube Station staff, to enquire if any servicemen and women would like to join in their commemorative Remembrance project in this Centenary year of the start of the Great War. The project was to record many pieces of First World War poetry and to broadcast them over the Tube's tannoy system at Angel, Clapham North, Covent Garden, Oval and Westminster Underground stations on Remembrance Sunday as well as Armistice Day itself. In view of the very tight
turnaround time, a broadcast email was sent to the Circuit of Service Lodges by the MetGSec, W. Bro Capt. David Swain, RN, PAGSwdB and volunteers sought. Volunteers were directed to
present themselves at various Underground tube stations and were recorded reciting poems of the Great War period by Kipling, Sassoon and many others. The volunteers included W. Bros Richard Curtin, SLGR (Fitzroy Lodge No. 569); Edward Goodchild, AGDC (WM of Household Brigade Lodge No 2614); Steven Ridley, LGR (Comrades Lodge No. 2740); David Swain, PAGSwdB (Navy Lodge No.2612); John Wood, PAGSwdB (Antioch Lodge No. 3271) and Derek Wood, SLGR, (Fitzroy Lodge No. 569). Feedback from the public was very positive with one typical tweet being sent "WW1 poetry being read out at Westminster Tube Station - I love this City! #rememberthem". Congratulations from arena to all the volunteer readers!
