SCP Help Regenerate Hastings Sea Front

The landmark roundabout and fountain on Hastings sea front was built 50 years ago but the fountain has been out of action for ten years due to corroded pipework. Having just won a lottery grant to re-build Hastings pier completely, which was destroyed by a fire, Hastings Council turned to local businessman Chris Thayre Swimming Pools to see if he

could design something that would add another sparkle back to the Hastings promenade but also be eco-friendly.

Chris, along with his Electrical Engineer Richard Harrison (Alfa Electric), set about coming up with a design that would be cost effective and energy efficient to run. After removing all the old iron pipework and manifolds, the shell was fibre glassed and

all the pipework renewed in PVC along with the new dishes. The icing on the cake was to add LED colour changing lights for the sparkle that the council were after. This work was carried out in conjunction with two local companies, Castle Mouldings and EJ Group, a well- known company within the pool and leisure industry.

Next on the list were some energy efficient quiet pumps which could programme the different type of water and light features that Chris and Richard had in mind. Chris contacted Paul Jeffries at SCP and the Pentair Intelliflo was suggested. Paul Jeffries said: “Coming from Hastings which has had some bad press over the years (most of which has been exaggerated), I was more than happy to help with the project. Hastings is a fantastic place to live and the old town is a vibrant lively place but also very friendly.” Having purchased the three Intelliflo pumps from SCP Richard said: “We were going slightly into the unknown but the back-up and help we received

Virgin Is Flying With STA

Virgin Active Health Clubs, the UK’s leading health club operator with 100 clubs nationwide, currently teaches over 24,000 children to learn to swim, making it the largest swimming club in the UK. To support this great effort, Virgin Active Health Clubs has been working in close partnership with STA over the last 18 months to train all its qualified swimming teachers across to STA’s Level 2 Certificate in Swimming Teaching. The success of this teaching partnership

with STA has recently led to Virgin Active Health Clubs extending the training opportunities into the local community; giving members and non-members access to nationally accredited swimming teaching qualifications at their local Virgin Active Health Club.

Health Clubs said they are excited to be able to offer these swimming training opportunities to the local community. She said: “Through our experienced in-house team of STA Tutors, we want to encourage young people to develop their qualifications and build the first stepping stones of their career into the fitness industry.” Virgin Active Health Clubs took the corporate decision to convert to STA’s swimming teaching qualifications because it gave them the flexibility to run its training programmes in-house using a network of STA qualified tutors.

Shani said: “This has tremendously helped in terms of the number of training qualifications we are now able to offer and deliver, and not just for our own in-house staff but also now to the wider community. “We now do more in-house swimming

teaching training than we ever did before; providing more staff with more qualifications, which is greatly beneficial to both the individual and the organisation. And, as a result of the STA’s keen pricing structures we are able to be very cost competitive when promoting our training services to the community, which is increasingly important in today’s price sensitive market.”

As part of the company’s commitment to

quality, and to ensure teachers professional skills and knowledge are current, Virgin Active Health Clubs also manages a regular programme of Continuing Professional Development with STA. This includes STA’s snorkeling programme, which has enabled Virgin Active to expand its aquatic programme and attract older children back to the swimming pool.

The three Intelliflo pumps supplied by SCP

from various members of staff at SCP made the project go more smoothly than we thought it would,” and Chris added: “The main thing was that it was all right on the night although we did have a few nerves as the leader of the council and the Mayor were switching it on in front of a substantial crowd.” The Intelliflo pump has some unique features which were perfect for this project: • Energy saving fast payback • Low noise level • Versatile • Easy programming • Longer life equipment • Three year warranty.

Chris and Richard are now looking forward to the next project and working with SCP.
