Keeping the torch of Triumph alive

Who has not seen a Triumph drive by, then stop, look and smile, thinking how much fun it would be to own and cruise around the city in one?


The Triumph was founded in 1885 by Siegfried Bettman, who was later joined by Maurice Schulte. They started producing their own bicycles in Coventry, England. In time their company produced the legendary motorcycle, then eventually the famous automobile. Actually, a number of different companies


owned it. The last Triumph model, the Acclaim, rolled off the line in 1981. By that time it was es- sentially a re-badged Honda Ballade, built at the former Morris Motors works in Cowley, Oxford. I sat down recently with Martin Burtt and Stephan Briere from the Ottawa Valley Triumph Club.

they have keeping the torch alive. Since the car is no-longer in production, they have become the keepers of this small part of British heritage right here in Ottawa.


The main goal of the club is to teach owners how to fix and maintain these lovely cars. They have become a resource centre for finding parts, attending swap meets and making connections with local businesses such as Stagra Automo- tive in Greely, which finds machine parts and rebuilds engines.


The events the club hold begin with Plea- sure Drives and include barbeques and pot luck dinners. They help organize the All British Car Day as well as combined events with the MG, Mini and Jaguar car clubs – including an annual darts tournament. They participate in charity
