Two floodplain lakes join to create this site, known for its waterfowl population. In winter, substantial numbers of Bald Eagles utilize the site; numerous songbirds and planted shade trees abound.

Rockwell Mound is the second largest Indian mound in the Midwest, covering nearly two acres and standing fourteen feet high.

Comprised primarily of open lake water, sloughs, and bottomland forest, and operated as a public hunting area, this area sits just northeast of the confluence of the Illinois and Sangamon rivers. It contains pockets of upland tallgrass, prairie and sand prairie in addition to a host of birds, butterflies and turtles.
