A passion for education beyond book publishing


In addition to our involvement in a variety of socio-economic initiatives such as the Adopt-a- School programme and our Teachers for Change partnership with You, Drum and Huisgenoot magazines, Oxford employees scramble to participate in annual fundraising events including Mandela Day, Blisters for Bread, and the Oxford-Cambridge Paddle to Read Dragon Boat Race.


In 2010, Oxford and Cambridge employees took each other on in what has become an annual and much-anticipated battle on the V&A Waterfront marina. An informal team-building event between employees of Oxford and

Cambridge publishers quickly gained momentum, and in 2012 saw the likes of Olympic gold medallist Matthew Brittain getting on board to support the Oxford- Cambridge Paddle to Read Dragon Boat race.


Over and above a fun family day packed with fierce competition, the event primarily aims to raise funds for Te Shine Centre, an NGO doing inspirational work to improve literacy levels in Western Cape schools. Moreover, Shine aims to encourage a real love for reading amongst young learners – a mission close to the hearts of both Oxford and Cambridge.
