Tea Tree
Tea tree oil (or Melaleuca Oil) is derived via steam distillation from the tree, Melaleuca alternifolia. Native to the Eastern coast of Australia, indigenous people have used the plant and the oil to treat skin infections and wounds for many years.
Tea Tree oil has been shown to have several healing properties including antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anti- inflammatory.
Tea Tree oil can be used successfully to treat fungal infections in the foot such as Athlete’s foot and toenails (Onychomycosis). It can be used in skincare for the treatment of acne (a treatment comparable to benzoyl peroxide lotion but with far fewer side effects). When added to shampoo it effectively treats dandruff to reduce flaking and itching. Tea Tree Oil may also help in treating respiratory problems such as sore throats, coughs and colds and may assist in more severe conditions such as asthma, tuberculosis, and bronchitis.
A Tea Tree solution can be used pre and post waxing to clean the skin, remove excess oil, calm irritation and prevent infection of the follicles. Topical application can be used as an effective insect repellent, perfect for open air spa treatments in many areas of Mexico where mosquitos can be a nuisance.
Around the house and at the spa, Tea Tree can be used as a disinfectant cleaning solution and anti-mold spray killing any bacteria, fungus and mold spores that may be present.
This ‘medicine cabinet in a bottle’ should not be used undiluted on the skin and should never be taken internally, but can be kept on hand for use in treating a variety of ailments and conditions.
