ISPA 2012 Conference & Expo: Inspire
The 2012 ISPA Conference & Expo was held at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center, Kissimmee, Orlando, under the conference theme ‘Inspire’. Of the many highlights of the conference, the inspiring General Sessions really stood out.
In the first General Session, held on the Monday, Keynote speaker Jim Collins (author of Great by Choice) delivered the sound advice that great companies are built on 1) fanatic discipline 2) empirical creativity, and 3) productive paranoia coupled with ambition and humility. He advised us to test new theories and business avenues tentatively before rushing in to every new trend – likened to shooting bullets first not cannonballs. He recommended we never forget the fundamentals of the business, the tasks that must be completed every day for continued success – compared to the 20-mile march based on Amundsen’s expedition to the South Pole in 1911. The decision to strive to cover 20 miles a day no matter how bad the weather or hard the terrain proved successful due to this discipline.
Tuesday’s session included 3 separate talks on Mind, Body and Spirit:
Rancho La Puerta’s, Deborah Szekely encouraged us to focus our minds through breathing, intentional silence, and regular “meetings” with our mind. Her speech ended with a call to action to join her Wellness Warriors initiative to unite and stand up for wellness.

The General Session on Wednesday, the final day of the conference, featured the dynamic and inspiring Australian speaker, Peter Sheahan, author of Fl!p and Generation Y, who outlined the trend that the spa industry has taken and compared it to many industry examples before us. He encouraged us to not fall prey to the “gravity of success,” to examine where we could be headed in the future. By looking at the periphery of our industry we should see the future trends. He recommended directing each business toward niche or price but never to both.
The next ISPA Conference & Expo will be held on Oct 21- 23, Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, NV, USA.
