Anastasia Tillman


Ballet Conservatory and LakeCities Ballet Theatre 2 dancer, Anastasia Tillman, recently won 2nd place in the Junior Classical category and Top 12 in the Contemporary Dance Category in the Dallas regional competition of the Youth America Grand Prix. She went on to compete in the International Finals at the Youth America Grand Prix where she advanced to the second round of the competition. Upon returning home, she was contacted by the YAGP organization that a talent scout was in attendance at the competition looking for ballet dancers for a possible new Broadway musical entitled Little Dancer about the life of famous artist, Edgar Degas. Anastasia flew to New York where she made it through all the call backs. She, along with 10 other little dancers, were told they would be notified in a couple of weeks if they are selected to be part of the Little DancerWorkshop proj- ect at Lincoln Center. The project will star NYCB dancer, Tiler Peck, to name a few big names and will be choreographed by famous Broadway choreographer, Susan Stroman.


Congratulations to 2012 DCNT scholarship recipient Calley Skalnik for being named in the Top 21 final round of the Senior Women’s Division of the Youth America Grand Prix in New York City! Calley trains at the Tulsa Ballet Center in Oklahoma.


Steven Loch, former Ballet Conservatory and LakeCities Ballet Theatre dancer, was recently promoted from apprentice to a corps contract with Pacific Northwest Ballet.

Dirrick Butler, a senior at Clark Atlanta University worked as a Video/Digital Strategies Intern for the Obama for America 2012 Presidential Campaignin Chicago this summer—and he has his training in dance to thank for it. According to Butler, it was his years of attending workshops and other training classes at Dallas Black Dance Theatre’s Academy that taught him the skills needed to be prepared for the opportunity.


Emily McIntyre, 16, of Coppell High School and Drew Shafranek, 18, of Lovejoy High School won awards in the National High School Musical Theater Awards at Broadway’s Minskoff Theatre on June 25, 2012. Emily picked up the Rising Junior Award, which pays $7,500 for a coveted spot in the six-week pre-college drama program at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pa., while Drew won $2,500 as one of three top finalists for best actor. Emily and Drew, who repre- sented Lyric Stage as the annual Schmidt and Jones best actor and best actress winners, were among six competitors from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Dallas Summer Musicals’ DSM High School Musical Theatre Awards program, in its inaugural year, sent Michael Williams of McKinney Boyd High School and Emily Emmett of Flower Mound High School; and Casa Mañana’s Betty Buckley Awards sent Myles Phillips and Chloe Voreis, both of Mansfield High School.


On June 21, 2012 the U.S. House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee voted to cut National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) funding by $14 million for FY13 from the current funding level of $146 million. This decrease of nearly 10% is in addition to the $9 mil- lion decrease the NEA suffered last year. The full House Appropriations Committee is expected to vote on the FY13 Interior Appropriations bill in the coming weeks.
