2012 Dance Council Scholarship Recipients


Lauren Ohman Gene, Louise & Fred Kelly Tap Scholarship


Lauren is a Teen Company Member at Next Step Dance Performing Arts Center and is also a member of the Drawbacks Youth Tap Ensemble. Lauren has studied under great tap artists such as Acia Gray, Keira Leverton, the legendary Buster Cooper and oth- ers. This summer, Lauren attended the 12th Annual Soul-to-Soul Tap Festival in Austin, the 15th Annual Third Coast Summer Tap Festival in San Antonio, and attended for the fourth year Adrenaline’s Syncopate in New Jersey.


Anna Haas Gene Pflug Scholarship


Sixteen-year-old Anna is a member of the Shannon Crites School of Dance Competitive Company studying ballet, jazz, contemporary and tap. She is a fantastic tap artist and a great student as shown by her involvement with school: President of the Junior Class, Treasurer of the Student Council and VP of Beta Club. Anna has taken many master classes in Dallas including Rhythm Junkies, Legacy Tap Project, and performed with the DCNT/Dallas Summer Musical Hoofin’ Crew. She has attended Soul 2 Sole and Tap Into the Network summer intensives.


Natalie Monger is a dance major at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts who enjoys writing about dance in her free time.


Chloe Nix Margaret Rylatt Scholarship


Sixteen-year-old Chloe has been awarded scholarships from the Monsters of Hip Hop, Break the Floor, and Broadway Dance Center. Chloe joined the Drawbacks Youth Tap Ensemble to study with Katelyn Harris and Keira Leverton. She has also studied with Lane Alexander, Buster Cooper and Barbara Phillips. With the Drawbacks, Chloe has per- formed at the Everything on Tap, Chicago Human Rhythm Project and more. This summer, she attended the Third Coast Rhythm Project, the Chicago Human Rhythm Project, and the Soul 2 Sole Tap Festival.


Keaton Dear Rhythmic Souls Tap Scholarship


Keaton studies ballet, jazz, modern, lyrical, and rhythm tap at Third Coast Dance Center and Earle Cobb Dance Studio. She is a member of RPM Youth Tap Ensemble, under the director of Barbara Phillips. She has performed at the Soul to Sole Tap Festival Showcase and Third Coast Rhythm Project Festival. With RPM, she performed in Chicago Human Rhythm Project’s JUBA! Spotlight on Canada and Michelle Dorrance’s Extraordinary Machine. In the future, she hopes to attend Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and the Young Arts Dance Conference.


Emily Mikolitch Jackie Hunter Memorial Tap Scholarship


Emily has loved tap since she started dancing, but after attending Chicago Human Rhythm Project in 2008, she realized that tap dancing is what she wanted to do with her life. She has received scholarships to Chicago Human Rhythm Project, DC Tap Festival, Space City Tap Festival, Soul to Sole Tap Festival and Vancouver Tap Festival. She has instructed tap dance at Next Step Dance, Dallas Ballet Center and Park Cities Dance. Her dream is to attend college and dance with a professional tap company.


Bharath Ram Indian Cultural Heritage Foundation


Fourteen-year-old Bharath was born in San Antonio, Texas. He has been learning ‘Bharatanatyam,’ the ancient classical Indian dance form from South India, for the last seven years, at the Arathi School of Indian Dance and Kalalaya Indian Performing Arts. He has performed in productions such as Chandanbala, La Meri, Kavita, and Dashavatara. In the coming years, he would like to learn from eminent master teachers and learn Nattuvangam and choreography and use his dance skills for charitable events.


Pranati Ahuja Arathi School of Dance Scholarship


Pranati first began learning Bharatanatyam, an Indian classical dance form, with the Arathi School of Dance under the tutelage of Guru Smt. Alpana Jacob, at the age of six. She recently performed her Arangetram, or solo classical dance debut, in July 2011, under the direc- tion of Guru Smt. Revathi Satyu, and held this event as a fundraiser for the charity organization Akshaya Patra, raising funds sufficient to feed and support 33 needy children in India for an entire school year.
