2012 Dance Council Scholarship Recipients


Melissa Anderson Texie Waterman Memorial Scholarship


Fifteen-year-old Melissa is a student at the Ballet Academy of Texas and is a second year member of the Ballet Ensemble of Texas Company. Melissa has attended many intensive programs, including American Ballet Theatre in Alabama, Joffrey Ballet in San Antonio, and Magnus Midwest in Michigan. After she graduates from high school, Melissa wants to go to college and major in dance and hopefully join a dance company.


Madi Hicks Amber Strauser Scholarship


Madi, 15, is a junior at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. She trains at Academy of Dance Arts and was a soloist in the Dallas Repertoire Ballet’s Nutcracker and danced a duo at Resounding Harmony’s Spring Benefit Concert. This past year, she toured with New York City Dance Alliance as National Teen Outstanding Dancer. She is also a Pulse Protégé, Nuvo Breakout Artist and Jump VIP. Madi's goal is to dance for a company like Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet or Complexions Contemporary Ballet.


Madison Winter Amber Strauser Scholarship


Madison is fourteen years old and a member of the Ballet Ensemble of Texas under the direction of Lisa Slagle. Madi has attended intensives at Magnus Midwest and the Joffrey Texas Workshop. This summer, she returned to Magnus Midwest to improve her tech- nique and expand her exposure to different choreogra- phers. Her long term goal is to dance with a national dance company and to one day inspire other young girls to dance.


Daylee James Mama Peggy Scholarship


Daylee attends Raevin Dance Factory and has traveled with her competitive dance team for eight years. In 2011, she received a scholarship to the Lyric Stage Broadway Stars Camp from the Dance Council. This year, she extended her studies at Oklahoma City University’s summer intensive, which focused on pol- ishing “the triple threat” attribute of a Broadway dancer. Daylee's dream is to appear on So You Think You Can Dance to open many doors for her dancing career.


Bailey Dove Lyric Stage Musical Theatre Scholarship


Fifteen-year-old Bailey attends Dove Academy of Dance Arts where she studies ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, contem- porary, musical theatre, and hip-hop and is on their Senior Company. At her high school, Bailey is in all hon- ors/AP classes and has been very involved in her Advanced Theatre class. She is continuing to seek new challenges in her dancing and acting career.

Ana Bertheson Denise Gallagher Memorial Scholarship


Ana discovered her passion for musical theater in eighth grade and has been trying to experience as many plays and musicals as possible ever since. She plans on becoming a musical theater major and realizes that working with other directors and performers will broad- en her musical theater experience. Not only is she a dedicated performer, she is also ranked second in her class of 578 students. Discipline is a very important aspect of Ana’s success.


Sade Lewis-Manriquez Denise Gallagher Memorial Scholarship


Sade is fifteen years old and has danced for Impulse Dance Company at Lancaster Middle School. She now dances for DC3, a dance company at Lancaster High School. She has performed in many festivals, events, and concerts and she plans to continue her dance train- ing and instruction.


Josmyne Megafu - Dallas Summer Musical Academy of Performing Arts Scholarship


Josmyne is a junior at Lancaster High School and has studied dance since sixth grade. Before she was a dancer, Josmyne was a dedicated cheerleader and gym- nast. Gaining flexibility and strength in cheerleading was an advantage in her transition to dance. Josmyne hopes for further opportunities to advance her skills and gain new experiences out of her comfort zone.


Daizha Lankford Gregory Hines Memorial Scholarship


Daizha is fourteen years old and studies at Dallas Black Dance Theatre. This summer, she attended the Dance Theatre of Harlem’s prestigious program. As she contin- ues to grow, she hopes to continue to study different types of communicative art such as drama, singing, and fashion. She is excited to reach and set new goals for her technique and stage presence.


Ani Mayo Buster Cooper Tap Scholarship


Ani attends Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and loves tap dancing. Ani participated in the Christmas Pops Showwith the renowned conductor Marvin Hamlisch. She also attends McKinney Dance Academy, where her instruc- tors help her to reach her goals, which include attend- ing Columbia University with a major in dance, experi- encing commercial work and Broadway, as well as per- forming in a professional tap company, like Tapestry or the Rhythm Junkies.
