2012 Masterplan

Sporting chance among ceramics

London dealer Robert Young never fails to create an inventive display of his signature stock of folk art wherever he goes and his stand at Masterpiece this year will be no exception.

A recent find that he is particularly pleased with is a set of 12 blue and white ceramic panels commissioned in 1878 from Copeland Spode by the Scottish industrialist, philanthropist, politician and collector Thomas Russell for the billiard room of his new home, Cleveden House, in Kelvinside, Glasgow.

Each of the 2ft 8in x 2ft 2in (80 x 65cm) earthenware panels is hand painted by the Copeland artists Robert John Abraham (1850- 1925) and Lucien Besche (d.1901), and depict the following sports: ice hockey, shot put, cricket, running, football, polo, tent pegging, fly fishing, hunting, hare coursing, shooting and stalking. These are probably the largest known examples of this kind of ceramic art from their day and Masterpiece will be the first time that they have been offered for sale in public.

Robert will be offering them together as a set for £240,000.

Hence the redesign of the 2012

marketing material to incorporate the simple tagline ‘Art Antiques Design’ – undoubtedly an improvement. So what else is new for Masterpiece

2012? “The fair is roughly the same size

this year, but part of the Masterpiece philosophy is never to do the same thing twice,” says Thomas. “So this year we have changed the

restaurants around a bit – Harry’s Bar will now be in a more intimate space

to one side and the large bar down the centre will be occupied by the seafood restaurant Scott’s – and we have brought in a wider range of contemporary design, with displays of contemporary pieces from the Carpenters Workshop Gallery, Based Upon and the Design Museum.” Gagosian Gallery, the world’s largest

dealer in modern and contemporary art, also take part for the first time, apparently creating a ‘special project’ which they are so far keeping very tight-lipped about. The American decorator Jamie

Drake and the London-based property developers and designers Candy & Candy will both be creating room sets that fuse old and new, mixing designs from different periods to show how they can be effectively combined. Although he is aware that Masterpiece

are hardly pioneering such an approach, Thomas hopes: “We can promote the idea that design doesn’t have to be from just one particular period or discipline
