communities, there are also differences based on the unique- ness of each community’s history, culture, make-up, and exist- ing issues. One has to really do their due diligence before- hand because although sports is universally loved and known to be a powerful catalyst, it does not facilitate things the same way or at the same rate for every community. I belief that I sort of already explained what learnings we im- part through our programs, however let me reiterate that we use sports and physical activity, behavioral modeling, question -and-answer sessions, and dialogue to empower and to impart various messages and lessons to our program participants. The sports and physical activities used so far have included soccer, skipping rope, competitive running, wiffle ball and American football. The activities have also allowed for the use of tools such as resistance bands, jump ropes, and medicine balls. One of the first lessons often occurs soon after we arrive and set up our camp. What tends to happen is that the youth, start physically pushing and jockeying --almost fighting-- to have access to the equipment and gear even though there is enough for all. It’s the poverty mentality that has them pushing to get their share and then some, as fast as possible for fear that they might lose out altogether. When you have to do that to survive on a daily basis, it becomes a way of life. It gets chaotic for a few minutes and our volunteers have to settle them down. So within the first five minutes begins a lesson about orderly conduct, discipline, being considerate of others, waiting your turn, about sharing, etc. Every interaction is a po- tential learning opportunity that we try not to miss. The learn- ing that occurs during sports and play is about peaceful con- flict resolution when opposing sides clash, trust, teamwork, discipline, tolerance, gender equity, collaboration, sharing, celebrating each other, and dealing with victory or loss.
