walk forced her to go back to basics. ‘We were putting one foot in front of the other, we had shelter, food, and each other – what more could we need?’ she told me. ‘Life suddenly became very simple. My thoughts kept turning to my illnesses and how they had affected me and my family.’ Helen’s creative side – she is a talented watercolourist who has taught the skill for the Dart U3A - began to take a hold.

‘I began to try and organise my thoughts and connect it to the nature we were seeing around us. The long length of the walk allowed us to see the effect the season has on the plants and animals around us. When we started in the horrible weather the foxgloves were just starting to show their leaves, and by the time we got to the finish at Poole, they had flowered and died.

‘The motto of my school was ‘Sweet is the Rose but grows upon the briar’. Back then I never understood it, but after fighting cancer twice and now taking on this walk I realised that through adversity and challenge I had found my own strength. Lots of things started to make sense, and when we completed the walk I wanted to record it in a book.’

‘Sweet is the Rose But Grows Upon the Briar’ was created with Helen’s impressions, thoughts and realisations from her walk and the challenges she has overcome throughout her life, illustrated with her beautiful paintings and photographs of the walk itself.

‘I’m really pleased with it,’ she said. ‘The book is my attempt to convey a number of ideas, but ultimately it’s about the links between humans and nature, and that every single moment is a journey and we have to accept the good and bad we find.’• by Phil Scoble
