Lee Berry dines at The Bank Restaurant and Bar in Bexleyheath
A SUMMONS to your local high street bank can often lead to a daunting experience - being told you are exceeding your overdraft; outgoings surpassing income. It’s enough to put you off your food. Thankfully, a visit to The Bank in Bexleyheath holds no such misgivings. It’s a visit you will make time and time again with interest. The Bank Restaurant and Bar on Broadway in Bexleyheath is a converted former Barclays bank. Built in 1914, it was transformed into a restaurant two years ago - bringing Central London fi ne dining to this south-east corner of Greater London. As soon as you walk in you are instantly put at ease.
The relaxed atmosphere is complimented by the stylish dining area, dark tables and soft lighting making it an ideal location for groups or intimate meals - especially with Valentine’s Day just around the corner. The building’s past is fondly remembered with
framed photographs from a bygone era dotted around the walls - and not a car to be seen out on the street! Indeed, if you look carefully you can spot some typical bank architectural features. When entering
menu available so you can really make it a family affair. To start, I opted for the pan fried scallops, with black pudding, chorizo sausage and a beetroot puree. It was delicious, with very different fl avours coming together perfectly. Even the salad leaves had been laid on the slate plate as if they were the fi nal part of a jigsaw. The other starter was a delicious and succulent chicken caesar salad: she described it as the best she had ever tasted. I was all geared up to order rabbit pie for my main, until our friendly waiter came over with the evening’s steak selection
through the chunky original doors facing you is the old vault, which is now a private dining room and caters for eight to 12 guests. It is a private dining room, but still helps guests feel a part of the main restaurant atmosphere as there is a large glass window separating the two dining areas. The thick walls now encase an extensive and impressive wine collection from all over the globe.
Upon sitting down it is the wine list that is next to impress, though you may fancy one of The Bank’s signature or classic cocktails. The wine has been extensively researched and tested to ensure it compliments every dish on the menu. My wife and I selected a crisp white Italian number, Riva Leone Gavi.
Like the wine, the menu offers something for everyone, no matter what your budget. The Bank has several menus on offer at different times of the week, including an affordable Express Lunch and traditional
Sunday Lunch Menu, serving modern European cuisine at a reasonable price, whilst not
sacrifi cing on quality. There is also a children’s
on a large piece of slate. Of the four Argentinean 28-day aged steaks on offer (fi llet, rib eye, sirloin and rump) I plumped for the 300g sirloin, with homemade peppercorn sauce and chilli spinach. It was a change of mind I didn’t regret. My partner was equally delighted with her main of salmon fi llet, with sautéed potatoes, green beans and a hollandaise sauce. The smile - and silence - said it all.
Our bill totalled a very reasonable £65.90.
