The International Baccalaureate
Internationally recognised qualifi cation for students aged 16 to 19
George Green’s Sixth Form is one of a small number of state schools to offer the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) accepted by top universities worldwide.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is an internationally recognised qualifi cation for students aged 16 to 19. It is based around detailed academic study of a wide range of subjects, including languages, the arts, science, maths, history and geography. It leads to a single qualifi cation, rather than separate qualifi cations for individual subjects. However if you don’t achieve the full diploma, you’ll be awarded a certifi cate for each subject taken. It’s designed to encourage pupils to: learn how to learn, ask challenging questions, develop a strong sense of their own identity, develop the ability to communicate with and understand people from other countries and cultures.
The IB Diploma
Programme is made up of a compulsory ‘core’, plus six separate subjects where you have some choice over what you study.
The compulsory core contains three elements:
theory of knowledge: you’ll learn about the bases of knowledge, and how to analyse evidence and express yourself in rational argument; you’ll also be
encouraged to draw on experiences you’ve gained outside the classroom. Creativity, action and service: this part of the programme encourages you to get involved in theatre or music activities, sports and/or community service.
Extended essay: you’ll investigate a particular topic of interest and be asked to write a 4,000 word essay about it.
George Green’s attracts students who want to achieve the very best results, who are ambitious and dynamic, and who view themselves as citizens of the world.

Mrs Naughten, Director, describes our students as ‘communicators, thinkers and risk-takers. Communicators, because they just tell it as it is. Thinkers, who chose a programme of study to prepare them for the outside world, whether for employment or university. Risk-takers, because some decide to move from their friends to assure their success in their studies.’
This is just one of six great reasons to choose George Green’s Sixth Form.

What makes the International
Baccalaureate Unique
A continuum of education, consisting of three programmes for students aged 3 to 19.
A reputation for high quality education sustained for over 35 years. It encourages international-mindedness in IB students. To do this, we believe that students must fi rst develop an understanding of their own cultural and national identity. Creates a positive attitude to learning
by encouraging students to ask challenging questions, to critically refl ect, to develop research skills, to learn how to learn and to participate in community service. The programmes are accessible to students in a wide variety of schools – national, international, public and private – in 141 countries. These IB World Schools form a worldwide community in which there is no such thing as a “typical” school (more than 50% of IB students are in state-funded schools). IB World Schools cooperate in curriculum development, student assessment and the governance of the IB, making this a unique international collaboration.
