Music, drama and sport Why are they important in the curriculum?
A broad curriculum is essential if we wish to produce well-qualifi ed, confi dent and resilient young people who enjoy learning and develop the necessary skills and competencies needed for successful adult lives. Drama, Sport and Music encourage children to take on challenges, which develop confi dence and the many skills, which they will need in the future. Drama is not just about the skill of acting itself; it develops confi dence in communication with others. As a subject, it empowers pupils to be able to present ideas, concepts or characters with purpose, persuasion and an ability to engage others. It also allows pupils to use their imaginations and develop skills to manage stress and workload. If you were to be asked what Mozart, Liszt, Bizet and Saint-Saens have in common, you might answer that all are world-renowned musicians. It is perhaps not surprising that all four also received their fi rst piano lesson before the age of nine. Therefore, offering young people the opportunity to perform; instructing, encouraging and inspiring them to do it well and sustaining this over the many years it takes to develop as musicians, are all ingredients, which schools can and should offer to students.
Sport is an important aspect of our culture and is enjoyed by many people both as participants and spectators. We only have to consider the high profi le given to the London Olympics to see the impact that sport has
on all of our lives. The defi nition of sport implies competition, physical skill, rules and customs, all of which refl ect modern life. It is therefore crucial that our children are given the opportunity to experience different sports and physical activity through the school curriculum in readiness for the outside world. As well as the known physical benefi ts; improvement of motor skills and physical fi tness plus encouraging a healthy lifestyle; it is generally agreed that sport has a motivational impact on children, increasing self-esteem and wellbeing. It can also help children to develop essential social skills such as concentration, self-discipline, co-operation and to become team players, considering others as well as themselves. The outcome of an outstanding education should leave young people with more than just GCSE and A level certifi cates. It should help them to develop the qualities, competencies and skills that will help them
to make a success of their adult lives. Education should widen horizons and give young people choices, leading them on to many different career paths and opportunities. Lisa Laws
